When it comes to naming children, the SA Government has revealed that we South Aussies have an affinity with one name: Oliver.
Like the Mall’s Balls or complaining about the price of a schnitty, naming a baby boy Oliver seems to be one of our state’s favourite pastimes, because for the 13th year in a row, the name has taken top honours for the most popular name in 2025.
This is with an incredible 122 boys named Oliver this year.
My heart honestly goes out to all the primary school teachers in five years’ time when they have to not only yell the three-syllable name but add extra letters to the end just so the rug rats know which one is being spoken to.
“Time to go, Ollie!” at Brighton Beach will soon involve half the kids under 10 looking your way.
Girl parents seem to be a bit more original – hence they don’t have the consistency to take top place – with Charlotte claiming the top spot by the absolute skin of her teeth, narrowly defeating the Islas by just two – 95 to 93, respectively.
So without further ado, here’s the 2025 baby name leaderboard for SA.
The boys:
- Oliver (122) – The undisputed GOAT.
- Noah (108) – Edged out the competition (probably with a very small boat).
- Henry (105) – The name of a future king.
- Leo (97) – Roaring into fourth.
- Theodore (94) – Likely to be called ‘Theo’ or ‘Teddy’ by lunchtime.
- Levi (77)
- Luca (76)
- Charlie & Elijah (75)
- Jack & Oscar (70).

The girls:
- Charlotte (95) – Still the reigning champ.
- Isla (93) – So close she can taste the silver.
- Olivia (76) – Jealous of Oliver’s rank.
- Harper & Hazel (69) – Bringing that ‘H’ energy.
- Amelia (68)
- Elsie & Violet (66)
- Lily (61)
- Daisy & Ruby (59)

SA’s Minister for Consumer and Business Affairs, Andrea Michaels, said the stat’s showed that traditional names were on the return.
“Traditional names remained popular in 2025 and this year, we’ve seen Charlotte – long a favourite of royalty – hold the top spot for South Australian baby girls for the second year running,” she said.
“… Floral inspired names increased in popularity this year with Violet and Daisy entering the top 10 alongside previously popular choices, Lily and Hazel.”
The full Top 100 will be avalible next year.
